Overview of NDE
From Inception till Date
Popularly known as NDE, NDE is an Abbreviation for the National Directorate of Employment. Established in November 1986, the organization began its operations in January 1987. The organization came into existence in response to a prediction made on the effects of the 1980s recession. The existence of NDE could curb the drastic reduction in capacity utilization and closure of industries in Nigeria.
Before the NDE structure came into existence, the rate of unemployment in 1987 rose from 4.3% in 1985 to 7.0%. This is according to the Annual Report of the NDE 2013. As a direct response to the upsurge in unemployment, the then military government headed by General Ibrahim B. Babangida, set up a committee headed by Mr. Stephen O. Chukwumah to tackle it. The Committee was to proffer a sustainable interventionist solution to reduce the rising levels of unemployment in Nigeria.
Following the report of the Chukwumah Committee, the Federal Government resorted to the establishment of the NDE under decree No. 29 of 1989, which was replaced with ACT, CAP 250 of the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999. However, from 1985 to 2011, the unemployment rate increased from 8.5% to 23.9%.
Mission
To design and implement job creation programmes that will promote attitudinal change, employment generation, reduce poverty and enhance wealth generation. In simple terms, NDE is an employment creation agency.
